How to Prepare for your Wisconsin Court Appearance

WHEN TO ARRIVE- You should plan on arriving at court 30 minutes before your court appearance. This gives you time to find parking, walk through the metal detector and find the courtroom you need. In the Dane County Courthouse, there is a computer just past the metal detectors that you can type your name in and it will tell you the time and courtroom you need to appear in. Also, when you get off the elevator, there are paper signs posted on the wall informing you of each person in each courtroom and the times. Keep in mind that you are entering an environment where respect is shown by arriving on time, dressing properly, and speaking in a manner to show you respect the court.

WHAT TO WEAR TO COURT-In the words of my mentor, you should dress as if, "you are going to church to meet the IRS." As in all cases, you will be judged by your appearance so dress appropriately.

THINGS TO REMEMBER- Turn off your cell phone. Do not speak inside the courtroom unless you are whispering to your attorney. Make sure to appear for all court dates. If you fail to appear, it is likely a warrant will be issued for your arrest. Show Respect to the Judge at all costs. Even if you disagree with a judge, you should remain respectful to the judge and the legal system.
