Wisconsin borders the 5th largest fresh water lake in the world
and also has more lakes than almost every other state. As
a result, the State also has a high number of boating
accidents-both motorized and non-motorized. In 2008
Wisconsin had 20 deaths from boat accidents including 8 in
non-motorized boats. July is the most dangerous month of
the year for Wisconsin boat accidents.
Common accidents include: boats tipping or capsizing, no life
jackets on board, drunk driving crashes, drownings near Dams,
storms and waves causing the boat to capsize, and night time
reckless driving. Other common accidents are caused by
excessive speed, negligent driving, operating with persons on
the bow, deck or gunwale, overloading, poor navigation, skiing
and towing, and collisions with other watercraft.
Some of the worst injuires are caused by the propeller when the
driver fails to maintain an adequate lookout.
A reckless or drunken boat operater can easily injure or kill
other boaters or those using the water for recreational
purposes. An accident lawyer can help the injured party
recover for his or her damages.
According to the Wisconsin DNR, "Laws also require boaters to
operate craft at a speed that is "reasonable and prudent" for
conditions to avoid collisions with people, piers and other
legal obstacles like moored boats. The responsibility to avoid
hitting something in or on the water rests clearly with the boat
operator. People can lawfully swim at night without any
lighting. Piers don't have to be lit. Boaters need to travel
slowly and avoid drifting close to shore."

non-motorized boat, or in the water, you may be entitled to
