In Wisconsin, subject to some exceptions, the general rule
for statute of limtations on crimes is the following: 1. Felonies must be commenced within 6 years; 2. Misdemeanors must be commenced within 3 years after the commission thereof. Prosecution is commenced when a warrant or summons is filed, an indictment is found, or an information is filed. Note that there are numerous exceptions to the above general rule.
