Statute of Limitations on Crimes in Wisconsin
 
 In Wisconsin, subject to some exceptions, the general rule for statute of limtations on crimes is the following:

1. Felonies must be commenced within 6 years;
2. Misdemeanors must be commenced within 3 years after the commission thereof.

Prosecution is commenced when a warrant or summons is filed, an indictment is found, or an information is filed. Note that there are numerous exceptions to the above general rule. For the complete rule and all of the exceptions see Wis. Stat. 939.74.
