Various organizations rate and review attorneys. Several of the larger website/attorney rating companies charge fees to get listed. In my opinion if someone is paying to get listed or reviewed, the review carries less weight. The website AVVO creates profiles for lawyers and ranks them without charging the lawyer. However, lawyers who pay money to AVVO can get a sponsored listed above the other lawyers. AVVO allows lawyers to endorse each other and allows for client reviews also. Lawyer endorsements are nice but most lawyers have friends, co-workers etc. that are more than willing to endorse the lawyer in return for an endorsement back to them self. Avvo also has stale profiles including a local attorney listed as a defense attorney who is currently a prosecutor.
Some of the larger review type sites make lawyers sound wonderful. For example, many lawyers post on their website that they are a super lawyer or they are listed in "Best lawyers in (City)." A simple google search of best lawyers in a certain city returns a whole lot of "best" lawyers. For example, on bestlawyers.com their are currently 13 lawyers listed under best lawyer in Madison for person injury that represent plaintiffs. A search of super lawyers for personal injury lawyer in Madison returns 458 lawyers.
If looking for a personal injury attorney, I recommend speaking with trusted friends to find someone they can personally recommend based on past experience with that person. In my opinion, review sites like yelp, and google. tend to show more accurate reviews of lawyers because they are more likely to come from an actual past client rather than a friend or other lawyer in the community etc.
