Madison Wisconsin Bike Laws

States have bicycle laws known as statutes. Cities have laws known as ordinances. Usually a city adopts the state laws/statutes through and ordinance. In Madison, the city adopted state traffic statutes as through ordinance 12.011 shown below:

Pursuant to the provisions of Wis. Stat. § 349.06, the City of Madison does hereby adopt and incorporate into this chapter of the Madison General Ordinances the provisions of Wis. Stats. Chs. 340—348, inclusive of all future amendments to any provisions of those sections of the Wisconsin Statutes. The City's power to enforce any provision of Wis. Stats. Chs. 340—348, shall not be extended to any offense for which jail or imprisonment, other than for non-payment of a forfeiture, is a prescribed penalty.
